Internal Medicine
Our internal medicine services are provided by Sarah Shaw, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM. Dr. Shaw is board certified in internal medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Internal medicine is a specialty field that addresses issues involving numerous body systems. Dr. Shaw frequently evaluates the gastrointestinal, respiratory, neurological, cardiovascular, dermatological, and muscular systems. She also has a strong interest in neonatology and ophthalmology.
EQUINE GASTRIC ULCER SYNDROME
Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome affects up to 80% of our sport horses and up to 100% of our racehorse population. Definitive diagnosis is facilitated by 3m video endoscopy. This service is provided by Dr. Shaw on-farm.
WEIGHT LOSS, CHRONIC COLIC, AND CHRONIC DIARRHEA
Weight loss, chronic colic episodes, and chronic diarrhea are all issues encountered in all ages and breeds of horse. Abdominal ultrasound, gastroscopy, absorption studies, and biopsies may be performed on-farm to identify underlying causes of these issues.
RESPIRATORY EVALUATION
The respiratory system may be divided into the upper airway and lower airway. Dr. Shaw provides endoscopic evaluation of the upper airway including laryngeal function, the guttural pouches, and the ethmoid turbinates. Lower airway issues are also frequently encountered in equine practice and include bacterial pneumonia, equine asthma syndrome, and viral infections. Dr. Shaw provides speciality services including thoracic ultrasound, tracheobronchial aspirates, bronchoscopy, and bronchoalveolar lavage.
NEUROLOGIC EVALUATION
Dr. Shaw provides neurolgic evaluation for horses of all ages and in all levels of work. Cervical radiographs and EPM diagnostics are also provided on-farm.
